How To Deal With Sunburns

If you've underestimated how strong the sun can be, even in Europe, then here are a few pointers for you.

The skin is our largest organ and sunburn can be dangerous if ignored, especially where children and seniors are concerned. Even for a healthy adult sunburn that covers more than 15% of the body surface shouldn't be ignored as it may require medical intervention.

How much is 15%? When it comes to adults the Rule of Nine can be helpful. This rule is widely used to determine the percentage of total body surface area that has been burnt. According to this rule, the back and chest each equal 18% of whole body surface area, each arm equals 9% and each leg equals 18%.

If your sunburn covers less than 15% of your body surface and is first (redness, pain and swelling) or second degree (pain, redness, swelling, and blistering) you can try to use a few simple remedies:

Drink water

Sunburn causes water to be drawn to the skin's surface and away from the rest of the body. Drinking plenty of fluids will prevent dehydration.

Take cool baths or gentle showers

Cool water can decrease the temperature of the skin, and reduce swelling, and pain. Our Bath Salts are soothing to the skin, as they contain magnesium and lavender. It’s important to keep the water stream gentle during showers, as high water pressure can cause further irritation to already disturbed skin.

Moisturising

After each shower or bath, gently pat your skin dry and apply moisturiser that will trap the water in your skin. Oil-based products, particularly oils that have anti-inflammatory properties are great for this. We offer Tamanu and Macadamia Nut Oil, Body Silk and Apricot Kernel Oil in body-friendly 200g bottles and jars.

Painkillers

If you're feeling severe discomfort, you should consider taking painkillers to reduce the swelling and pain (ask your chemist for advice).

Do not pierce the blisters

The main function of blisters is to protect your skin. Piercing them can lead to infection so it’s best to let them heal naturally.

If you suspect that you or someone else is suffering from sunstroke call for medical assistance immediately.
